1 - 12 inch block from 44 inch fabric bolt width

The Ribbon Star block is a nine patch using squares and half square triangle units. To calculate size to cut center square, divide desired block size by 3, then add 1/2 inch seam allowance. To calculate size to cut half square triangle squares, divide desired block size by 3, then add 7/8 inch seam allowance.

Fabric 1: 
Unit A Cut 1 strip 41/2 inches wide. Subcut into 1 square.
Cut 1 strip 47/8 inches wide. Subcut into 2 squares.
Fabric 2: 
Cut 1 strip 47/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares.
Fabric 3: 
Cut 1 strip 47/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 2 squares.

Unit B - fabrics 1 & 2; make 4.
Unit C - fabrics 2 & 3; make 4.

  • Match 1 - 47/8 inch square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of lighter fabric.
  • Sew 1/4 inch seam on both side of diagonal line.
  • Cut units apart on drawn diagonal line.
  • Press seam to one side.
  • Makes 2 units per square pairs.

Ribbon Star layout

Using 1 of unit A and 4 each of unit B & C, sew each block together as shown in layout with 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press seams to one side.

[top]Tip: Put half square triangle unit fabrics right sides together and then cut squares. This way, square pairs will already be matched.
