Cut 1 strip 4 inches wide. Subcut into 4 unit A squares.
Cut 1 strip 43/8 inches wide. Subcut into 4 unit B squares.

Figure 1
  • Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams.
  • Cut half way (2 inches) between seams; press seams to darker fabric.
  • Place two different two patch units rights sides together, with background NOT together, snugging previously sewn seams.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams crossing previously sewn seams.
  • Cut half way (2 inches) between seams; press seams to one side.
  • Makes 2 four patch units per fabric pair.

Unit A - fabrics 1, 3 & 4; make 8.

[top]Half Square Triangle Instructions

  • Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of lighter fabric.
  • Sew 1/4 inch seam on both sides of diagonal line.
  • Cut units apart on drawn diagonal line.
  • Press seam to one side.
  • Units should measure 4 inches including seam allowance.
  • Makes 2 units per fabric pair.

Half Square triangles - fabrics 1 & 2; make 8.

  • Cut each half square triangle in half horizontally, then vertically (2 inches).
  • Turn small half square triangles as shown and sew together using a 1/4 inch seam; press.

Unit B - make 8.
