1 - 16 inch block from 44 inch fabric bolt width

This block is made using half square triangle and four patch units. To calculate size of squares to cut, divide desired finished block size by 4 and add 1 inch seam allowance.

Cut 8 - 5 inch squares.
Fabric 2: 
Cut 2 - 5 inch squares.

Cut 2 - 5 inch squares.

  • Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of lighter fabric.
  • Sew 1/4 inch seam on both side of diagonal line.
  • Cut units apart on drawn diagonal line.
  • Press seam to one side.
  • Square up units to measure 41/2 inch(es).
  • Makes 2 units per fabric pair.

Unit A - fabrics 1 & 2; make 2.
Unit B - fabrics 1 & 3; make 2.
Unit C - fabrics 1 & 4; make 2.
Unit D - fabrics 1 & 5; make 2.

  • Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams.
  • Cut half way (21/2 inches) between seams; press seams to darker fabric.
  • Place two different two patch units rights sides together, with background NOT together, snugging previously sewn seams.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams crossing previously sewn seams.
  • Cut half way (21/2 inches) between seams; press seams to one side.
  • Makes 2 four patch units per fabric pair.

Unit E - fabrics 1, 2 & 3; make 4.
Unit F - fabrics 1, 4 & 5; make 4.

Jewel Box quarters

Sew block together as shown in layout using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press seams to one side.

Makes 1 block.

[top]Tip: Put desired fabrics right sides together and then cut squares. This way, square pairs will already be matched.
