1 block 15" square using 44" fabric bolt width.

This Goose in the Pond block is a little scrappy. Four basic units make up this block: square, half square triangle, nine patch and a three strip square.

Cut 1 strip 31/2 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 Unit A squares.
Cut 1 strip 37/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 2 Unit B squares.
Cut 1 strip 11/2 inches wide. Unit C & D

Cut 1 strip 31/2 inches wide. Subcut strip into 1 Unit E squares.
Cut 1 strip 37/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 Unit F squares.
Cut 1 strip 11/2 inches wide. Unit D
Fabric 3
Cut 1 strip 37/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 2 Unit B squares.
Cut 1 strip 11/2 inches wide. Unit C & D

Cut 1 strip 11/2 inches wide. Unit C

Cut 1 strip 37/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 Unit F squares.

  • Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of lighter fabric.
  • Sew 1/4 inch seam on both side of diagonal line.
  • Cut units apart on drawn diagonal line.
  • Press seam to one side.
  • Makes 2 half square triangle units.

Unit B: fabric 1 & 3; make 4
Unit F: fabric 2 & 5; make 8

  • Using 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew together Unit D strips of fabrics 2, 3 & 1 respectively.
  • Press seams to one side.
  • Subcut strip set into 31/2 inch squares.

Unit D: fabric 1, 2 & 3; make 4

  • Using 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew together Unit C strips of fabrics 1, 2 & 1 respectively.
  • Press seams to one side.
  • Subcut into 1 - 11/2 inch wide rectangle.
  • Using 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew together Unit C strips of fabrics 4, 1 & 4 respectively.
  • Press seams to one side
  • Subcut into 2 - 11/2 inch wide rectangles.
  • Using 1 rectangle from first strip and 2 rectangles from second strip for each unit, sew first strip rectangle between second strip rectangles using 1/4 inch seam allowance.
  • Press seams to once side.

Unit C: fabric 1, 3 & 4; make 4
