2 - 3 inch units from 44 inch fabric bolt width

There are several methods to make Four Patchs. Following are instructions to make 2 Four Patch units from 2 fabric squares. To calculate how large to cut squares, add 1 inch seam allowance to what you want finished unit size to be. Below calculations are made using this formula.

  • Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams.
  • Cut half way (2 inches) between seams; press seams to darker fabric.
  • Place both two patch units rights sides together matching opposite fabrics, snugging previously sewn seams.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams crossing previously sewn seams.
  • Cut half way (2 inches) between seams; press seams to one side.
  • Makes 2 four patch units.

Tip: Put desired fabrics right sides together and then cut squares. This way, square pairs will already be matched.
