Double Irish Chain block | quilt

1 each of block A & B - 5" square using 44" fabric bolt width.

Instructions and calculator to make Double Irish Chain blocks. Two alternate blocks form the overall pattern.

Fabric 1
Cut 1 strip 11/2 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 Small squares.
Cut 1 strip 31/2 inches wide. Subcut into 1 Large square & 4 Rectangles 11/2 by 31/2 inches.
Fabric 2
Cut 1 strip 11/2 inches wide. Subcut strip into 16 Small squares.
Fabric 3
Cut 1 strip 11/2 inches wide. Subcut strip into 9 Small squares.

Figure 1
  • Sew 1/4 inch seams throughout.
  • Using Small squares - 4 of fabric 1, 12 of fabric 2 and 9 of fabric 3 - for each A block.
  • Chain piece columns - 2 to 1, 3 to 2, 4 to 3, & 5 to 4. Do NOT cut apart.
  • Press columns 1, 3 & 5 up; columns 2 & 4 down.
  • Sew rows - 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4 & 4 to 5 - nesting previously sewn column seams.
  • Press seams to right.

Make 1 Block.

Figure 2
  • Sew 1/4 inch seams throughout.
  • Use 1 Large square & 4 Rectangles of fabric 1 and 4 Small squares of fabric 2 for this block.
  • Chain piece columns - 2 to 1 & 3 to 2. Do NOT cut apart.
  • Press columns 1 & 3 down; column 2 up.
  • Sew rows - 1 to 2 & 2 to 3 - nesting previously sewn column seams.
  • Press seams to left.
