Cut 1 strip 41/2 inches wide. Subcut into 4 template B triangles (see instructions below).
Cut 1 strip 5 inches wide. Subcut into 2 Unit A & C squares.

Cut 1 strip 41/2 inches wide. Subcut into 2 each right & left template A triangles (see instructions below).
Cut 1 strip 5 inches wide. Subcut into 2 Unit A & E squares.

Cut 1 strip 41/2 inches wide. Subcut into 2 each right & left template A triangles (see instructions below).
Cut 1 strip 5 inches wide. Subcut into 2 Unit C & E squares.

[top]Square Goose Instructions (a.k.a. Peaky & Spike)

Square Goose unit
  • Cut out templates below adding 1/4 inch seam allowance on all sides.
  • Match template pieces as if to sew, lining up finished points. Trim narrow edge of piece A to size of piece B.
  • Cut template B pieces from fabric 1 alternating up and down always lining up base with strip edge.
  • To cut template A pieces from fabrics 2 & 3, fold strips in half lengthwise and alternate template up and down always lining up base with strip edge. (Note: there are right and left pieces for each unit.) Trim narrow point to template to use as a match for sewing together.
  • Unit B: Sew right A piece of fabric 2 to B piece using 1/4 inch seam, matching fabric edges and piece A trimed narrow edge. Press to piece A.
  • Sew left A piece of fabric 3 to B piece using 1/4 inch seam, matching fabric edges and piece A trimed narrow edge. Press to piece A.
  • Unit D: Sew right A piece of fabric 3 to B piece using 1/4 inch seam, matching fabric edges and piece A trimed narrow edge. Press to piece A.
  • Sew left A piece of fabric 2 to B piece using 1/4 inch seam, matching fabric edges and piece A trimed narrow edge. Press to piece A.

[top]Four Patch Instructions

Four Patch unit
  • Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams.
  • Cut half way (21/2 inches) between seams; press seams to darker fabric.
  • Place two patch units rights sides together, opposite fabrics matching together, and snugging previously sewn seams.
  • Sew 2 parallel 1/4 inch seams crossing previously sewn seams.
  • Cut half way (21/2 inches) between seams; press seams to one side.
  • Makes 2 four patch units per fabric pair.

* For odd number of blocks, there will be an extra Unit E four patch.

Unit A - fabric 1 & 2, make 2
Unit C - fabric 1 & 3, make 2
Unit E - fabric 2 & 3, make 1

Using 2 each of Units A, B, C, & D; and 1 of Unit E, sew block together as shown in layout using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press seams to one side.
