1 - 3 inch unit from 44 inch fabric bolt width

There are several methods to make Nine patch. Following are instructions to make 1 nine patch from 9 fabric squares. To calculate how large to cut squares, divide finished unit size by 3 and add 1/2 inch for seam allowances.

[top]Instructions

Nine patch block
  • Use 1/4 inch seam allowance throughout.
  • Chain piece column 2 squares to column 1 squares, right sides together and do not cut apart.
  • Chain piece column 3 squares to column 2 squares, right sides together and do not cut apart.
  • Press row seams opposite adjoining row so seams will nest.
  • Sew row 1 to row 2, right sides together.
  • Sew row 3 to row 2, right sides together.
  • Press seams away from middle.
  • Makes 1 Nine Patch unit.
