1 - 4" block using 44" fabric bolt width.

Instructions and calculator to make Nine to Four blocks using nine patch units with three fabrics. For this block you sew a nine patch, then cut into quarters. Turn two of the quarters and a fun pattern is created.

Cut 1 strip 2 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares.

Nine Patch Instructions
  • Use 1/4 inch seam allowance throughout.
  • Chain piece column 2 squares to column 1 squares, right sides together and do not cut apart.
  • Chain piece column 3 squares to column 2 squares, right sides together and do not cut apart.
  • Press row seams opposite adjoining row so seams will nest.
  • Sew row 1 to row 2, right sides together.
  • Sew row 3 to row 2, right sides together.
  • Press seams away from middle.

  • Cut nine patch unit into four 21/2 inch square quarters.
  • Turn upper left and lower right quarter squares 90 degrees as shown in layout.
  • Sew quarter squares together using 1/4 inch seam allowance; press seams to one side.
